Health Ministry Volunteer Agreement
I understand and agree that all Health Ministry Programs of the OptiHealth Network are informational and educational programs sponsored by a local Seventh-day Adventist Church and/or School. The goal of every OptiHealth Program is to reduce the prevalence of chronic lifestyle-related disease, disability, and death in my community, the nation, and the world. When put into practice, the recommendations of any OptiHealth Program will result in therapeutic lifestyle changes, disease risk reduction, and a higher quality of life.
OptiHealth Programs are NOT a forum in which any specific disease or medical condition is diagnosed or treated. Many who participate in OptiHealth Programs will be in a state of deconditioning, overweight or obesity, and may have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood glucose or type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, and a variety of other medical conditions and disabilities. Many of these health problems may improve while a person is participating in an OptiHealth Program, but the focus of every program is strictly on education and behavior change, and not on treatment of any kind, other than lifestyle modification.
I understand that as a Health Ministry Volunteer in any OptiHealth Program at any SDA Church or School that I am NOT to give any advice regarding any disease or medical condition. I will defer all medical advice to each participant’s health care provider. I will not make any recommendations or discuss the use of any prescription medication, surgery, or use of any medical devices for the treatment of any medical problem.
I understand that many people take non-prescription nutritional supplements of various kinds, including; vitamins, minerals, and herbal preparations, and that these are often in pill, powder, or liquid form. I understand that the OptiHealth Network does NOT endorse or encourage the use of any such products or preparations.
I will NOT discuss my personal use or recommendations regarding any of these products, and I will NOT use any OptiHealth Program as a forum to present, promote, share, sell or discuss in any way any items that I may personally use -- no matter how useful I may have found them to be in my personal experience.
I understand that I may discuss foods, food preparation, exercise, sleep, and personal daily devotions as these are the primary educational components of all OptiHealth Programs. Simple foods simply prepared are the foundation of a healthful lifestyle, and I will limit my discussions regarding food to selecting, storing, cleaning, cooking, baking, and eating healthy foods. I further understand that I may share recipes and food samples, but if I want to conduct a food demonstration, I will need to get prior approval from the supervising Health Ministry Leader of the OptiHealth Program at the SDA Church or School.
I will NOT discuss juicing. I will NOT promote or sell any foods that I may have grown. I will NOT promote, share, sell, or give any advice regarding cutlery, cooking utensils, grain mills, dehydrators, or any other item used in food preparation. I understand that all OptiHealth Programs include spiritual components from the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy. I further understand that I may discuss spiritual issues with participants individually or in the small groups to which I have been assigned as a Program Helper.
I understand that I may use the Bible and books by Ellen G. White to help explain or emphasize how God provides power for personal therapeutic lifestyle change, especially in the moments of strong temptation, but that I may NOT discuss any distinctive SDA doctrines during the OptiHealth Program, including in small groups, but that these may be the subject during individual phone conversations or personal visits with a participant away from the OptiHealth Program.
